Hello my darlings,
Dermaplaning is absolutely hands down one of my favorite things to add onto a facial! Dermaplaning by definition is an esthetic service in which vellus hair (aka peach fuzz) and the layer of dead skin cells, embedded dirt & debris is removed from the skin therefore resurfacing the skin.
Professional Dermaplaning
A professional dermaplaning session is done by an experienced esthetician which is important for two reasons. First of all: an esthetician is trained to work safely with your skin. There are certain areas that should not be included in this treatment as well as certain skin types that should not receive this treatment. An esthetician will know who is eligible and which areas to avoid. And second of all: having a bird’s eye view and two stable hands allows for a safer service. I use a disposable scalpel blade to perform a dermaplaning service. It allows me to properly resurface the skin because it is incredibly sharp. Doing a proper dermaplane service on yourself would be challenging and 99.9% guarantee you would slice yourself more than once.
Plus, an esthetician will properly cleanse and prep your skin AND provide excellent skin care for post dermaplaning.
My Friend Dermaplanes Herself at Home
Your friend is wrong, what they are doing is actually just shaving their face. No offense! They haven’t read this article so they wouldn’t know the difference between a professional dermaplane service and an at home service. The disposable blades bought at Target or on Amazon are not sharp enough to resurface the skin. They might remove some of the vellus hair, yes. But an at-home treatment unfortunately will not reap the full benefits as a professional treatment.

#1. Better product absorption
Your skin turns over new skin cells consistently. Typically a new skin cell is born every 28-40 days, but this also means they become old and die just as consistently. The surface of your skin is covered by dead skin cells. And dirt. And debris. It is important to resurface this layer by properly. If your skin care products are applied atop the layer of dead skin cells, it can lessen the effectiveness of your skincare products. Dermaplaning resurfaces the skin, removing this layer of dead skin cells and debris. This allows products to penetrate through to healthy new skin cells, giving you the full benefits of your lovely products.

Also, it’s a little gross to overthink, but we have mites on our skin. Everyone does! Typically these mites are not harmful, in fact in a healthy microbiome they are potentially helpful. However, if they have an overabundance of food (excess oils and debris in your pores) they can multiply and their excrement can cause issues like inflammation or rosacea. If you have an abundance of vellus hair (peach fuzz) your make-up can’t be applied directly on the skin which can cause it to look smudged or uneven. If make-up is applied to dry, flaky skin, the make-up will flake off and won’t set properly. Dermaplaning removes all of the obstacles allowing for the perfect make-up application directly on the skin.
